So I have recently had my first Patty Melt at the Waffle House. I know that’s crazy. Anyway I am obsessed. So I am recreating and putting my own spin on them.
In a skillet, melt 2 TBS of butter. Slice an onion into rings and put them into the skillet with the butter. Stir occasionally, but let the onions cook and caramelize for about 20 minutes on low. They will be soft and golden brown. Set the caramelized onions aside.
For the patty melts, I like to use ground chuck, because I like the fat content. I also like to use 1/3 LB per patty, so that the patty reaches the edge of the bread. Because that is super important. Let your ground chuck become room temperature. Mix together 1/2 tsp of onion powder, garlic powder, kosher salt, and pepper. Add your spices and 2 TBS Worstershire Sauce to your ground chuck. Mix together and form big enough patties to cover your bread.
Add 2 TBS butter to a skillet and bring to medium high heat. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for 3 minutes on each side. Now to put the patty melt together. I like to use either sourdough or artisan bread. Butter one side of each piece of bread. Add 2 TBS of butter to a skillet. Stack your bread, a slice of American cheese, caramelized onion, 2 pieces of cooked bacon, patty, American cheese, and another piece of bread. Cook For 3 minutes per side to brown the bread. Enjoy!!
